'Socialism - a love letter', a farewell to Socialism, the way I know it from Sweden, aslo a look at reformative rather than 'revolutionary' approaches.
Johanna Billing's film from 1999; "A Proposal for a Revolution" paraphrases the introduction scene of Antonionis Zabriskie Point, with a very different activity and energy level. A class room filled with lethargic students, in hip wears, waiting for a coffe break, redemption from buying the latest Face of ID magazine. Revolutionary tactics as fashion, no evolution in sight.
The fictional women's commune in Arizona is My-thu Perret's escapist strategy for real communal politics. Withdrawn in the dessert they invent their own rituals and satisfy their own needs, creating their own tools and environment. Arthur Jaffa's film Yellow Jacket is a painfully beautiful film with lyrical shots on a homeless man in a yellow jacket, lying still on the ground, maybe dead, while the street life passes by.
Lastly Drew Heitzler doubles up his own subject position with the one of the Weathermen Underground, the most successfull terror group in history, which consisted of middle class white americans. 'Memory of a Motherfucker" is a free form film, shot on super-8, recapturing a road trip through America, of one of the leaders who had just gone underground. In the film plenty of the monuments, which they bombed are passed by.
Sweden Graphics made a series of posters for the Swedish election 1998, with copy lines such as "Utopist of course, why go for something less that the ideal society" or "You born in the seventies, let go of the past and create the future", "Watch out for Loneliness". Without an political agenda or platform, on their own initiative, they were posted around Stockholm, next to the official election posters. Apropriately Sweden Graphics also made the invite, a tight fist and a question mark in one image, as well as the title labels and checklist.
My contribution "Absolut Democracy' , a wallpaper-border, which circumferenced the top of the entire space, with words, from the now meaningless political discourse such as: solidarity, civil disobedience, friendship, loyalty in the languages of the world. An IKEA home decoration in clean and subtle Absolut Vodka graphics, like slogans from the united colors of benetton.
